Field Trips With Dogs Kauai – As travelers looking for ways to give back to the local communities we visit, we are thrilled to hear about the Kauai Humane Society’s Dog Shelter Excursion Program from a friend who has just raised the next Kauai dog. From his life. Excursions. We have always had a passion for raising dogs, especially after we completed state dog rescue missions and took our Asher puppies from Texas (we will write about both at a later time).

This dog date fits perfectly into our schedule as a “holiday” where we go at our own pace without a set schedule and spend a day with our dog. We had a great experience where we wanted to share our lessons, experiences and tips. We hope that during your trip (or even where you live, if there is such a program where you live) you will spend a day with the dog and maybe even raise your own rescue dog!

According to the Kauai Humane Society, there are more dogs than humans on Kauai. Many of them were bred for wild boar hunting. If the dogs are not trained or too old, they are left on the street. With the weather in Hawaii, these dogs can survive on the streets for a while before they die and are rounded up and taken to shelters. This problem has pushed the shelter to critical capacity, which usually does not have enough space to properly store and care for stray dogs.

Established in 1952, this non-profit sanctuary is the only open-air sanctuary on Kauai. It adopts dogs, cats and all kinds of animals and works with non-lethal shelters, which is important because many shelters are forced to ethanize each animal when it is overwhelmed. The Kauai Humane Society does a great job of engaging the community through various programs, even for unused dogs, such as car rides and dog park day outings. This sanctuary helps about 3,000 animals a year!

Location: 3-825 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue, Hawaii 96766. The shelter is about 10 minutes from Kauai Lihue Airport. If you have a short time, you can plan your trip around when you land or leave Kauai.

Cost: Donate $ 40 to support society’s humanitarian efforts. There are several levels of donations (from $ 40 to $ 300) that can include dog food or even sponsor a dog flight to mainland Hawaii for breeding.

The Kauai Humane Society provides a backpack with all the essentials you need for the day.

We Had A Vacation Dog In Kauai!

We went to Kauai immediately after the Covid restrictions were lifted (September 2022) so some precautions remain. Initially, the staff selected a dog for us, while before Covid, rural tourists could enter the kennel and pick a dog they felt connected to. This was a bit disappointing, but it made the day even more exciting as I was sure we would be devastated to see so many stray dogs and want to give them all a home. They only allow viewers who are serious about breeding on the island to watch.

Because reservations and donations are made online while inside the building, it is seamless. The staff asked us about our plans for the day (of course hiking) and came back with Tiger, our new friend, for the day.

The tiger is a beautiful monkey mixed with orange-brown stripes that make him look like a tiger from behind. When our eyes met, we knew we had a friend in him! From the beginning, tigers have been good to humans. We have seen him do this many times before and he is excited to meet new people who will take him on new adventures. We later learned that the Tiger was one of the longest-lived dogs in the shelter (over 100 days when we met him).

We pick up Tiger at about 11:00 am and it is time for us to finish our briefing and presentation by lunch time. Wanting seafood called our name, so we visited the Konohiki Seafoods and had the most amazing pork loin with a plate and fresh Chirashi. Tiger waited patiently with Jeff outside the restaurant, and after the first 15 minutes with the dog, people were asking about Tiger and his leash, “Accept me.” We can easily share information about the Kauai Humane society and point out the brokenhearted. We finally found a local couple (whom we met at a restaurant) waiting at a dog shelter!

After lunch, our choice for the day is Sleeping Giant Mountain (Nono). We wanted something hard but also a dog, so we removed this suggestion from the list. The Sleeping Giant East Trail is 5.5 km long, 293 m high and takes about 2.5 hours to complete. We recommend this road only if the weather is good and it has not been raining recently, otherwise the road will be very slippery.

The tiger took some time to get used to walking with us; He walks forward or falls behind. As dog parents and former foster parents, we have experience in dog behavior and training. However, these skills are not required for guided tours, as long as you have a basic knowledge of dog walking and the ability to adapt to a dog and read its body language.

Tiger finally got into a rhythm, but it was so wet and hot that even this Hawaiian dog could not walk more than 2 Miles! We came back even though we were close to the top because it was important that Tiger felt safe and comfortable with us. While the Tiger was drinking and eating, the staff told us that most dogs do not use the bathroom during the trip because they are less nervous. Tiger proved they were right and we should not follow him.

Throughout the journey, the Tiger is a magnet. People come to us to talk and ask about him. This is an organic way to spread the word about Kauai Humane society. We have not seen any other dogs on the trail, which is useful because it is important that the shelter dog does not have a good relationship with other dogs.

Hawaiian Animal Shelter On Kauai Lets Visitors Take Dogs On A Daytime Adventure

The head of the road is about 30 minutes from the accommodation, but we started to walk back an hour before the head of the road. Lihue traffic information during rush hour is inaccurate on Google Maps. We advise you to return on time to avoid late penalties. Back at Kauai Humane Society, we filled out a short form detailing Tiger likes, dislikes and attitudes to help staff gather new information for potential recipients.

Saying goodbye to Tiger is hard, but we know he will have to be adopted because he is such a good kid. We recently checked the Humane Society website and found out a few months later that he had been adopted. Our hearts are full of this experience and we will do it again in a heartbeat.

“She is the cutest thing in the car, standing with her claws on the console. She’ll lick your cheek or put her head on your shoulder and just watch, ”Holmgren recalls, recalling their ride to their first destination, the Poipu Beach Walk. “She did not jump on us. She did not jump on others.” And after they had lunch, Holmgren, Raven’s adopted child, the next day, after her sister suggested, “She’s just sleeping at my feet.
