The highest snow-capped peaks are at Lake Louise. I take off my light coat and look at Charlie’s thick coat. My traveling companion had never seen a mountain.
We’re in Banff, Alta., on the last leg of a nine-day trip west that took us through five states as we moved from Toronto to Vancouver, partly for my husband’s job and partly to live in nature. more than anything new. I hope Charlie admires the Canadian Rockies and frozen lakes because we stayed for him, driving over 2,900 miles to our new home.
Flying is scary for anyone who has basic knowledge of aeronautics. Charlie is a very sweet 10 year old terrier with separation anxiety. And at 20 kilograms (about 45 pounds), it’s too big for the cabin. It must fly in an airline-approved box, such as a check-in bag, in a pressurized – but not necessarily temperature-controlled – chamber. (A guide dog is allowed in the room, but Charlie doesn’t help.)

The flight from Toronto to Vancouver takes about five hours, without stopping on the tarmac indefinitely, and we signed a contract on July 1st – hot asphalt season. Air Canada imposes temperature restrictions on pet travel on domestic flights when the temperature is above 29.5 degrees. To us, Charlie is a grumpy but stubborn and restless fur who loves Black Forest ham more than I have ever loved anything and tends to walk on a leash in a desperate attempt to sniff every tree he passes. On an airline, he is cargo.
Fortunately, airlines don’t confuse animals with luggage, but even one example is enough to make pets suffer.
In 2013, Larry the greyhound died on an Air Canada flight. In 2017, WestJet put labradoodle Cooper on the wrong plane. And earlier this year, Air Canada lost Dewy the cat during a layoff at Toronto Pearson Airport; He was missing for more than three weeks before being found, in critical condition. Owner Dewy originally ordered a direct flight, but the airline changed.

These are the only problems flying animals face at regular times. But we changed during the crisis and COVID-19 was not a friend in heaven. Travel restrictions, labor shortages and fewer flights lead to overbooking, last-minute cancellations, changes to departure times and even airline changes without notice. What if we fly and Charlie doesn’t? What would happen if our planes changed to one without climate control?
My husband and I flew to Vancouver in July to settle down, leaving Charlie with my parents and their big backyard. We flew back in October to head home, leaving plenty of time to plan our big trip to Canada.
“I’m like my dog’s executive assistant,” my husband laughs as he details how to schedule veterinary appointments, rent a car, and confirm dog-friendly hotels.

It’s much cheaper to fly if you don’t have a car, so we decided to make it a convenient trip – the best way to comply with COVID-19 restrictions – since we didn’t see much of Canada.
Before the pandemic, I traveled a lot, especially internationally. I thought Canada would always be there, wide and solid, waiting for a retirement trip after seeing the world. I was in no rush to explore this vast country, perhaps I took it for granted.
So if it weren’t for Charlie, I might never have seen the Terry Fox Memorial in Thunder Bay, deserted in the early morning hours except for dog walkers. Maybe I missed the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in Winnipeg and the famous Lake Louise with its tourist buses. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have seen the famous Gopher Hole Museum in Torrington, Alta., with taxidermied gopher dioramas that helped solve a local farmer’s rodent problem and turned a small town into an international destination.
When we finally arrived at our new house, exhausted and smelling like gas station bathrooms, Charlie took a few introductory steps to our porch, which overlooks the North Shore Mountains. He sniffed, turned and went back inside, unimpressed. Ambassadors Noodle (Scooter the dog) and Shamus (and their humans, Bree and Kyle) are now exploring the Canadian border. Here’s what they learned.

For the past three years, we have been planning end-of-summer trips for Noodle, Shamus, and our Van, Elmer. This year, the Canadian Rockies topped the list after the last two summers of limited travel. We live very close to the Canadian border and bring our baby to Vancouver regularly, but never on this long trip.

The site has menu options to create your own profile by pet and age. Noodle and Shamus, traveling for personal reasons, was simple – we needed proof of rabies vaccination. Border guards have the right to stop the crossing if the dog appears ill. We’re always a little worried about this due to Noodle’s spinal cord injury, but so far he’s doing great.
I keep my veterinary records digitally, but to be safe, I stopped our vet to get signed copies. Shamus and Noodle, who constantly yell at the car and strangers, never seem to bark at the border guards. I think they’re getting nervous.

I would say 90% of the time when we cross the border with our dogs we are not asked to show proof of illness. But, we made this trip. Luckily, it was a quick glance at the signed forms and we were on our way.
In the past, we were selected for a random search that required a long explanation to the guard to remove Noodle and the motorcycle from the car before the search. She had all the border guards meet her in her ring.
