That’s right, the summers are so hot that you can take a road trip through Oklahoma and Texas with your dog. Our birthday was celebrated in the first week of June.

September is the perfect time to read this post and make your fall-dog escape plans. Never plan

My first road trip with Henry on Route 66 with the dog was an adventure. “Adventure” means missing turns, tornado warnings, and perfect endings. I see Uranus. Because I don’t have the benefit of EZ Guide or experience.

If you’re in the planning stages of your Route 66 road trip, step #1 is to get this book. It won’t tell you where the dog-friendly stops are—that’s what I do—but it will hide your navigation and save your mind.

Things To Do In Oklahoma City In 2024

When you get your book, turn to page 16 of Oklahoma. Think about it. It says, “…check out the McGarry Route 66 Gallery by artist/EZ Guide Creator Jerry McClanahan.” There is a mobile phone number. Call and schedule a visit. The book is a travel guide, but its author Mr. Jerry. He will sign your book.

We picked up our route 66 for the dog where we left off, the Blue Whale just south of Catoosa. The gift shop was open so we grabbed passports and Oklahoma US 66 stamps.

Passport, but fun. We didn’t get passports in Missouri, so our first Route 66 stamp was in my leather-bound travel logbook. This is from the Boot Court Motel in Carthage, MO. It still stands as one of my favorite experiences on the road.

After our visit in 2019 Mr. Jerry Boots is under new management, I’m a little disappointed. I guess change is part of the process, but Debbie D’s hospitality is irreplaceable.

Pets On Amtrak

I have another tip for your road trip on Route 66: Get a hair-free road trip buddy. It really helps to have another person drive while one reads a book. That being said, Catoosa to Tulsa doesn’t require fancy navigation. We reached our hotel in less than two hours.

The dog-friendly Campbell Hotel is housed in a new building dating back to 1927. It has original wood floors, and antique bags can be found throughout the building before adorning the walls of the lobby. It’s easy to grab a Lore 66-themed set while you’re away on the weekend. It’s nicely decorated with art from the street, including antique metal signs in the bathroom. This bedroom features a feather bed, a large bathroom with a double-head shower.

The basement and lounge area are pet friendly, and there is a green area to the east of the parking lot perfect for small activities. Deposit is $25 per night.

You start your neon at 11th Street and the Campbell Hotel sign marks the hotel’s street-side entrance. A mile down the road (I suggest you drive), you’ll find more neon at Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios. Visit this dog gift shop in a 1950’s PEMCO gas station to get your Route 66 souvenir and a new water bottle for your pooch during the day. Come back after dark to see the 21-foot tall Space Cowboy glow. Across the street from Bucks is the Golden Meadow Dairy sign built in 1934. The original building was demolished in 2004, but the sign was saved and relocated to this location on Route 66. Details for the history of the sign on the signs in the gallery below the sign.

For dog-friendly food on Route 66, check out Talley’s Good Food Cafe. It’s only 5 minutes from Campbell’s and has many American fare menus. You can continue with your passion for interior decoration or enjoy a dog-friendly patio with a special bowl for your furry friend.

For after-dinner fun and keeping things laid back, plan a trip to Admiral Twin Drive-In. They have been showing movies on Route 66 since 1951. Francis Ford Coppola used the location to film a secret movie scene in The Outsiders. Dogs are good, but must be on a leash.

Tulsa attractions mentioned in the EZ Guide: Blue Dome Gas Station, Blue Dome District and Gilcrease Museum. From past travel experience, I can tell you that Gilcrease has five themed gardens and 23 dog-friendly acres that you can explore with your dog. In the Blue Dome District, your pooch can join you at Fassler Hall’s delicious beer garden for German cuisine.
