Since these symptoms can also indicate other diseases, the veterinarian will confirm the diagnosis of parvovirus infection with a thorough examination, including diagnostic blood tests. Parvovirus is very serious in puppies, causing severe dehydration, multiple organ failure and death. Vaccination protects puppies against severe parvovirus infection. 1. Bordetella: Also known as “kennel cough”. A common bacterial pathogen in the disease complex, it often causes clinical signs of respiratory disease in dogs. This vaccine is often required by kennels and breeders and is highly recommended for dogs that are in frequent contact with other dogs.
2. Lyme disease: Also called Lyme disease, it is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted by the black-legged tick (deer tick). This disease can affect both animals and humans. Symptoms include fever, which can become chronic, as well as other symptoms such as loss of appetite, lethargy, and swollen lymph nodes. Abnormal neurological, cardiac, renal, and reproductive symptoms may also occur. 3. Leptospirosis: A contagious bacterial infection caused by organisms that can survive for long periods in stagnant surface water. Animals and humans can become infected by consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms include weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy, and early mild conjunctivitis. Later stages of the disease include shortness of breath, increased thirst and urination, back pain, reluctance to move, and jaundice. Kidney and liver failure are often fatal consequences of this disease. The disease is often sporadic, and once the disease becomes established in an area, many dogs become infected. It is also contagious to humans (zoonotic) and is transmitted through the urine of an infected animal.
It is recommended that puppies receive vaccinations every 3-4 weeks (starting around 6 weeks of age) until 14-16 weeks of age. If your puppy does not start the vaccination series before 12 weeks of age, he will only need two vaccination appointments, but until then he is unprotected and susceptible to infection.

Cindy Marabito runs a pit bull rescue operation from her home in Austin, Texas. “We are the only raw food, holistic pit bull sanctuary and no-kill rescue in the United States,” she says. Nine dogs now run in her large, hollow backyard on the banks of the Colorado River.
Most states—including Texas—require dog owners to give their pets a rabies shot every three years. Health officials say vaccination prevents rabies, which has a 99% fatality rate in humans and animals.
But Marabito believes current vaccination guidelines are “exaggerated.” She is one of several pet owners with “canine vaccine hesitancy” identified by a recent Boston University School of Public Health study published in the journal.
