Best Dog Friendly Accommodation Jindabyne – Unfortunately, the Snowy Mountains in the NSW High Country are not the most dog-friendly places. Most of the ski fields and attractions are located in the Kosciuszko National Park, so there are not many places for dogs to visit.

However, you can stay in Jindabyne or just outside the national park with your pups and enjoy the beauty of this alpine region. Here are my tips for visiting Jindabyne with your dog…

So, since dogs aren’t allowed to enjoy the walks and ski slopes of Kosciuszko National Park, what dog-friendly things are there in Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains?

Choosing Jindabyne Cabins

In the Snow Mountains, the most reliable snow is found at the higher elevations of Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass and Selwyn ski areas, especially in years when natural snow is low and ski area operators have to rely on artificial snow. While none of the ski resorts allow dogs, they aren’t the only places in the Snowy Mountains that have snow.

During the colder periods when it snows at lower altitudes, it is possible to see snow in the nearby town of Jindabyne – maybe once or twice a year. While there may not be enough snow for skiing or snowboarding, sometimes there is enough snow to have fun playing in the snow with your pup!

The most famous walks in the Snowy Mountains are located in Kosciuszko National Park, especially the many walks that lead to Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak. However, there are also interesting walks around Jindabyne.

The Easy Walk is a paved walking and cycling route that starts at Banjo Patterson Park in central Jindabyne and continues for 3.5km to Discovery Parks – Jindabyne Caravan Park (where dogs are no longer allowed), near the Thredbo junction.

A lovely walk along the shores of Lake Jindabyne, the route also passes Jindabyne’s only dog training area, Claypits Recreation Area. Allow about an hour for the walk, if you do a full walk, and make sure your dog is on a leash behind a leash.

Lake Jindabyne was created in the 1960s as part of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme and is now a popular trout fishing spot. The lake has one of the largest freshwater reservoirs in all of NSW and is home to populations of leek and rainbow trout as well as Atlantic salmon.

Fishing is especially popular during the warm summer months. You can fish from the shore, but it is better to go to the lake by boat. If you don’t have your own boat and equipment, you can hire both boats and fishing equipment from several shops in Jindabyne. And of course, your dog is welcome, perhaps with its own life jacket.

Lake Jindabyne is not the only lake in the area with good fishing, but Lake Eucubene is also a popular fishing spot.

Top Hotels In Jindabyne

With several breweries and even a few wineries around Jindabyne, there’s no excuse not to try a few local beers while you’re in the Snowy Mountains with your pup by your side.

Jindabyne Brewing is located on the western edge of town, open Wednesday to Sunday. Round dogs are allowed, and there’s also a small menu, from grazing plates to schnitzels (including a vegan option).

Kosciuszko Brewery is located inside the grand Banjo Patterson Inn on the lake. Although dogs are not allowed in the brewery, the famous Kosciuszko Pale Ale is served in various bars on site, and dogs are allowed at outside tables.

Alternatively, head out of town to Snowy Vineyard and Microbrewery, home of the Dalgety Brewing Company. It’s a 40-minute drive from Jindabyne, but reviewers unanimously agree it’s worth the trip, especially for the ginger cider.

Dogs are welcome and they can be greeted by Sadie, the farm girl who lives in the house. It is usually open from Wednesday to Sunday and also has a restaurant on site. The final stretch of the drive is open and best accessed via Bulgundara Road.

In the heart of Berridale just 25 minutes from Jindabyne is Shut the Gate Wines. A small, passionate wine producer in the Clare Valley and Snowy Mountains, their Berridal cellar door is located alongside The Little Grocer. Make your choice and then sit outside in the dog-friendly garden with a glass of wine and a pie.

Although dogs are not allowed to visit the Kosciuszko National Park, it is okay to walk in the National Park with your dog in the car, as long as you do not stop along the way. If you pass through the park without stopping, you won’t have to pay the entrance fee either.

Travel 110km from Jindabyne to Khankoban, near the Victorian border, along the Alpine Road. I think the most beautiful part of the drive is the first half as we pass Thredbo where the snow is still high in November and then past the Great Divide Range shrouded in mist.

It takes almost 2 hours to complete the journey to Khankoban, where you can stop for rest or lunch. There aren’t many options in Khankoban, so maybe pack a picnic for lunch.

After visiting Khanchoban, you can return to Jindabyne by the same route or take a longer route back via Kiandra. (On our last road trip we actually went to Victoria.) It wasn’t long before I drove through Kiandra, formerly the town of Cabramura, but if memory serves, it was even more amazing.

Allow about an 80-minute drive from Khankoban to Kiandra, near the junction of the Snowy Mountains Highway. After that it takes 90 minutes to get back to Jindabyne. The total running time of the loop is approximately 4 hours 40 minutes.

Please note that some of these roads are closed in winter and snow chains may be required on other roads. It is best during the warmer months of the year.

Jindabyne is home to two dog training areas, perfect for your pup to let off some energy or wander off.

The first area is located in the Claypit Recreation Area on the western edge of town, which shares the same land as the disc golf course. A marking is placed on the edge of the control area, outside of which the dog must be kept on a leash.

There is also another no-dog area on the foreshore of Pooh Bay. It is located on the southern side of the Cobon Crescent, on the eastern side of the city. A map of both areas can be found on the council’s website.

While visiting Jindabyne we had breakfast at Café Parc next to the Snowy Region Visitor Centre. The cafe has several large outdoor tables where dogs are allowed.

The Best Accommodation In The Snowy Mountains

A popular place, it may take a while to get an outside table when it’s busy. Open daily for breakfast and lunch, this cafe is also a great place to enjoy brewed coffee and tea.

Another dog-friendly cafe that’s great for lunch is the Birchwood Cafe, located behind the Snowy Region Visitor Centre. As Jindabyne’s ‘food spot’, the cafe is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is fully licensed. There are a few dog-friendly tables outside.

There is a selection of dog friendly accommodation in and around Jindabyne. Book a dog-friendly cabin in winter. Although there are also dog friendly caravans and camping sites – perfect for warmer weather!

If you want to bake year-round, consider Pender Lea. They are located in Crackenback, just outside the National Park and 15 minutes from Jindabyne. They offer a selection of cottages, holiday cottages and cottages where pets can stay with you. There are plenty of places to explore pets.

Although no pets are allowed, you can reserve one of their six luxury pet-friendly units, each with indoor and outdoor units (heaters), for a daily fee.

Another great pet-friendly option near Jindabyne is Touchdown Cottages. The six cottages are set in a beautiful bush garden, each with plenty of privacy from the grid. Up to one dog is welcome per cabin as long as they are house trained and socialized (as there may be other dogs and small children).

Another nearby kennel is Tinkersfield. They also have tall farmhouses in Crackenback that sleep two to eleven. Each of them combines rustic charm and modern comfort. Ask to bring a pet when booking. They also have a kitty for when you’re out and about – ask for details.
