One of the dog-friendly islands off the coast of Queensland, particularly in the tropics, is Great Keppel Island. Walking the dog to Great Keppel in Yeppoon is a wonderful day trip with beautiful beaches, swimming and snorkelling. There is so much to do on Great Keppel Island!
The easiest way to get to Great Keppel Island is by ferry. There are two ferry companies that offer a short 30 minute trip with several departures throughout the day. Advance reservation is recommended.
We traveled with Keppel Konnections who allowed dogs on board for free. Our dogs were not required to wear a muzzle. There are also larger Freedom Fast Cats that charge $5 for small dogs and $10 for large dogs.
The main attraction of Great Keppel Island (Wop-pa) is its beautiful beaches, which are fortunately dog-friendly. In fact, there are no signs indicating whether dogs are allowed on the beaches. However, as the island is in the same administrative area as Yeppoon, the standard rules for dogs on a leash during the day probably also apply to dogs off a leash before 8am and 4pm.

Fisherman’s Beach: Center of the island where the ferry drops you off and close to the few shops, cafes and accommodation on the island. Walk along the beach to the southern end and start with a stroll to the surrounding beaches.
Shelving Beach: The easiest beach to visit is a 5-10 minute walk from the end of Fishermans Beach, although the last part of the walk is quite bumpy, especially if you’re wearing a thong. The beach is popular for swimming and snorkeling and has sections of reef on both sides of the beach.
Monkey Beach: Considered the best snorkeling spot on the island, skip Shelving Beach and take the longer walk to Monkey Beach. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to visit this beach.
Long Beach: This beautiful long stretch of white sand is great for paddling and swimming with your dog. There are two ways to get to the beach. The easier one can be found at the end of Fishermans Beach. There is also a path inland that goes around the garbage island. The eastern end is a nude beach, although we had almost the entire beach to ourselves during our visit.

There are many hiking trails on the island, but these days they are neither well maintained nor marked. It’s best to keep your dog on a leash when walking as we saw monitor lizards, echidnas and lots of birds in the otherwise peaceful bush. If you are staying overnight on the island, it is recommended that you inform your accommodation of your bushwalking plans.
As part of our ferry booking with Keppel Konnections we added a meal at the Great Keppel Island Hideaway including a drink which was great and tasty. The bistro at Hideaway is mostly outdoors and dog-friendly, with plenty of water bowls. On the way out I noticed a sign that said “Dogs prohibited beyond this point”, but I’m not sure which area it applies to; We weren’t the only ones with a dog.
Other dining options on the island include Tropical Vibes Café in the main store and Great Keppel Island Pizza. The two options will likely be dog-friendly outdoor tables or ordering takeout and heading to the beach.
