After almost two months of traveling around Queensland with our dog, I share my tips and experiences. Of course, there are some places and cities that are more dog-friendly than others, but there are still dog-friendly places to stay, things to do, and places to eat all over the state.

Driving to the tip of Cape York is a bucket list item for many Australians visiting Queensland. Fortunately, there is no need to leave your dog behind while you attempt this, dogs can join you on the trail and make a final photo extension at the end of Cape York.
Top 15 Tourist Attractions In Brisbane
There are actually some restrictions on where dogs can and cannot go in Cape York, so plan your trip in advance and check the rules. There are many other travelers with dogs who can share tips.
Unfortunately we haven’t done this bucket list experience yet because we didn’t have 4WD on our last lap around Australia. And if you only have a 2WD drive, I recommend driving to the nearby hot spots of Cooktown, a surprisingly dog-friendly town.
Even if you don’t make it all the way to Cape York, or even halfway to the Queensland coast, you’ll pass endless beaches along the way, many of which are dog-friendly, with dogs allowed. After walking the entire Queensland coast with my dog, I’ve compiled a list of the best dog-friendly beaches in Queensland, stretching from tropical north Queensland to the Gold Coast. For each of my beaches I have detailed rules for visiting dogs (many dogs are allowed), however always double check the last sign.

Just be careful when visiting the beaches of North Queensland with your child. From Gladstone north, both crocodiles and stingrays are dangerous. Check the signs at your local beach and stop playing in the sand from the water’s edge when in doubt.
The best place for dinosaur hunting in Australia is outback Queensland, especially the area between Winton, Richmond and Higgindon. Although not all attractions and museums are dog-friendly, there are still plenty of things you can do with your dog.
The best friendly option is to visit the Flinders Discovery Center in Higgindon. This small local museum welcomes dogs to join you inside with a wall of pictures of the four-legged guests.
The highlight of the museum is the ‘Hoogie’, a replica of the 7 meter long Metaborosaurus skeleton found in the house. There is also a collection of fossils, including many dinosaur bones. The museum recently reopened after a major renovation with new exhibits and a park.

In Richmond, you’ll be limited to taking selfies with your dog at the Chronosaurus statue outside Chronosaurus Corner, Australia’s largest fossil museum. However, ask for permission to visit local fossil hunting sites where dogs are allowed to accompany you. Fossil hunting can also be done in Higgindon.
Winton is the star attraction in the Tri-Cities. Just outside the city is the National Dinosaur Museum, which has an impressive collection of fossils from Australia’s largest dinosaurs. Channels are available on the site but have mixed reviews.
Maybe log on to a dog sitter for the day (ask at the information center or the vet). Also, use a dog walker to go to Dinosaur Stampede National Monument in Lark Conservation Park, where dogs are not allowed.
Queensland is home to countless islands, from large to small. Although dogs are not allowed on many islands, some of which are in national parks, there are a number of other Queensland islands that you can visit with your dog.
The Top Day Trips From Brisbane
Close to Brisbane, the three most dog-friendly islands to visit are Bribie Island, North Stradbroke Island and Cochimudlo Island. It’s an easy drive to Bribie Island, home to one of the best dog-friendly beaches around Brisbane. If you have a 4WD, North Stradbroke Island is perfect for a weekend getaway, camping near the beach with your dog. While the tiny island of Cochimudlo is an easy day trip from Brisbane.
Off the coast, the two hot dog islands are Big Cape Island and Magnetic Island. My pick is Keppel Island, perfect for a dog-friendly day trip from Japan, enjoying the sun, sand and water with your little one by your side. Magnetic Island is best visited with your dog if you bring your own car, perhaps staying at a dog-friendly Airbnb.

While Queensland’s coastline stretches for thousands of kilometres, Queensland’s Outback region is vast. Everywhere there are endless outback towns and outdoor areas, perfect for a dog-friendly adventure.

In many ways, Queensland is Australia’s food bowl, with many fruits, vegetables and more grown in the state and making their way to supermarkets across the country. However, the best thing is to try some domestic products from the street stalls, sometimes at low prices, your dog will often leave you by your side.
Some of my top tips include picking bananas around the embassy, trying coffee around Mareeba at Atherton Table and foraging for mangoes around Bowen. (Kensington Pride mangoes are also called Bowen mangoes; if you’re visiting outside of mango season, buy mango gelato at Big Mango in the southeast.)
Top Dog Friendly Private Camp Grounds Near Brisbane
For most of the things on this bucket list, I didn’t choose just one place to visit. But I couldn’t resist including the historic village of Herberton in particular.
This historic museum complex in Atherton Mizland, not far from Cairns, is the largest historic village in Australia. In addition to a collection of more than 60 buildings, each building is filled with historical artifacts, from trucks and vans to sewing machines and bottles. You need at least one full day to explore everything, the ticket will be valid for up to three days.
Best of all, dogs are welcome on leashes to join you, even inside the buildings! It’s an interesting driving experience
