From campsites to holiday apartments and beach houses, here are some of my favorite places to stay in south east QLD. Living in Brisbane during the covid restrictions and border closures has given us the opportunity to do more local travel. And traveling locally meant that our Great Dane Pickle was always included in our travel plans. about me
Dog Friendly Places Near Me To Stay
I’m Sasha, Great Dane mom and owner of Arctic Mist. A few years ago, I would not go more than a few months without an international vacation. But times have changed, and in recent years we’ve been doing a lot of local trips with our Pickled Great Dane, especially around South East QLD. Unfortunately Pickel passed away last year. But we recently welcomed a Great Dane puppy named Pumpkin into our family. He follows in Pickle’s footsteps and will join us at many events.

So I thought I’d share some of my favorite dog friendly places to stay in South East QLD, including things to do and links to accommodation.
But before we go any further, if you’ve never traveled with your dog before and aren’t sure where to start, check out my blog at
There are many dog camps around Australia and Hip Camp is a great place to start. You can enter the number of pets in your search and the results will only show pet-friendly options.
Gordon Country in the Gomboora Valley is one of my favorite places to camp with dogs. It is located across the Cunningham Gap between Aratula and Warwick, just over two hours’ drive from Brisbane. We have camped there several times and started going there years ago (long before Pickle) when it was just a cattle ranch with no facilities. It has changed a lot over the years and now they have facilities, glamping sites and cabins.

Although the properties and campgrounds are dog-friendly, they do not allow dogs in the cabins (only in yards and fenced-in porches). We never stay in cottages because of this. If you go outside of school/public holidays, you’ll most likely have the port to yourself. However, you need a 4WD to get the best camping spots. Access to Gordon Country is via a dirt road and there are places near the entrance and office that can be accessed without a 4WD.
Dogs can be off leash, which is great. But be careful because there are free cows and donkeys on the property. We like to go there to relax around the fire, but there are plenty of 4WD and hiking trails. If you don’t mind the cold you can swim in the harbor and if you go in winter bring your warmest clothes, it gets very cold!
There are several campsites on North Stradbroke Island. Dog laws seem to change regularly, so it’s best to check the Stradbroke Island website for the latest information on dog-friendly campsites and beaches. Stradbroke Island is a 45-minute ferry ride from Cleveland. There is public transportation on Stradbroke Island, but if you are bringing your dog, I recommend taking your car on the ferry. Remember that dogs must be on a leash to get out of the car on the ship. There are also dog friendly holiday homes on Stradbroke Island, see below for more information.
If you are looking for a holiday home/apartment, Lidaying with dogs is a great website to find dog friendly accommodation. Each property lists pet-friendly features, such as whether the property is gated, whether dogs are allowed, and whether they provide things like dog beds, bowls, and poo bags.
Best Dog Friendly Hotels In The Lake District 2023
Be sure to read the terms and conditions, as some places only allow dogs outside or dogs of a certain size.
. If the conditions are not clear, contact the accommodation provider before booking. It’s better to be clear in advance than to be stuck in the middle of your vacation!
Also make sure that the layout of the accommodation is suitable ie. Is your dog comfortable with stairs or an elevator, is there a fenced yard, or is there a place for your dog to run errands? If you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to call and ask.
We stayed in a beautiful 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment (Perfect Alex Beach Pad) in Alexandra Headland, just north of Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. It is on the second floor and there is a staircase to access the apartment. However, there is a large terrace with a great view, so you don’t feel like you’re in an apartment. Dogs are allowed, but not on furniture or in the public pool area.
Dog Friendly Guide For San Antonio, Texas
It is a short drive to the Point and Mooloolaba. There are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants with outdoor seating in the Mooloolaba grounds, as well as sunset markets in every bedroom.
Mooloolaba Beach is not dog friendly. However, Alexandra Headland Beach is dog-friendly on a leash and there are several other dog-friendly beaches a short drive away.
Noosa Avalon Cottages is located on a 30 acre property 5 minutes from the town of Pomona and approximately 30 minutes drive from Noosa. There are 5 detached houses in this property ranging from a 1 bedroom cottage to a 3 bedroom house. All are dog friendly and allow dogs. We stayed in the Kangaroo Lodge which has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. The beds are small (double), but I still recommend it for a nice and relaxing weekend.
Some homes have decks that are safe for your dog. The kangaroo lodge has a fenced yard, but the fence is to keep the cows out, not the dogs. But it was good for our big dance. The property is great for walking around, with native gardens and lots of wildlife and birds, as well as free-roaming cows, so you may need to keep your dogs on a lead.
Is Croatia Dog Friendly?
Pomona is a small country town with a few restaurants, coffee shops and an IGA supermarket. There are dog-friendly flea markets on Saturday mornings in Stan Tupper Park. They have lots of local crafts/handmade items as well as food stalls.
Toowoomba is QLD’s largest inland city and is known as the Garden City. Many people visit in spring for the iconic Carnival of Flowers. It is a very beautiful city with many parks and gardens to explore.
We have stayed in Toowoomba several times. However, my favorite place to stay is the Cat’s Cozy Cottage in Toowoomba. A beautifully renovated 3 bedroom Queenslander cottage. It is one of three original workers’ cottages listed on the Heritage Trail. This character listed cottage retains all the details and atmosphere of its heritage charm, but has been updated to offer modern conveniences. There are 2 queen bedrooms downstairs and a loft with 2 single beds suitable for children. There is 1 bathroom with a large shower, an electric fireplace in the living area, and a dog kennel on the back porch suitable for small/medium dogs. The back yard is fully fenced but there are steps from the back deck to access the yard.
Dogs are allowed in the cottage, only in the bedroom or on the couches. The bathroom and kitchen were well equipped and there were even dog biscuits for us when we arrived! The hosts Janice and Michael were lovely. We would definitely stay there again.
Dog Friendly Places To Eat , Sleep And Stay
Mudjimba is a small and quiet beach town on the Sunshine Coast, close to the Sunshine Coast Airport. The path back to Mojimba Beach has a nice park that is dog friendly. North Beach Dog Beach south of Mujimba in Twin Waters is rated as one of the best dog beaches on the Sunshine Coast.
Mudjimba Holiday Rentals has a number of options for pet accommodation, and Kirsty was great to deal with. We stayed in a beautiful 4 bedroom house across the street from the park. We went with our family and we had 2 dogs (a Great Dane and a large dog belonging to a family member) with us. Dogs were allowed in the house, only on the furniture.
The Esplanade has a lovely Italian restaurant and cafe with dog-friendly outdoor seating.
If you have a boat or just love the ocean, Hervey Bay is a must! We went with friends and stayed at ‘The Sandpiper’, a lovely 4 bedroom cottage in Creag Ness, just 10 minutes north of central Hervey Bay. Creag an Ness is a quiet residential area but it was perfect for us as it has a large garden for children and puppies and plenty of space to park the boat. Everything you might need in the house is included
