We set out in the north east corner of Devon, close to the border with Somerset, enjoying the stunning views of Exmoor National Park. This area is perfect for dogs, as exercising among the park’s hills, forests, and coastal habitats is sure to get their ears perked up and their blood boiling.
If you are looking for a place on the Exmoor coast where they can head towards the sea first, the village of Lynmouth is the best choice. There are several dog-friendly pubs, restaurants and cafes in the village centre, and the cliff railway linking the village to the hilltop village of Lynton is also dog-friendly.
The main pebble beach here – confusingly known as Black Sand Beach – is about 500 meters east of the harbor wall, backed by cliffs, woodland and coastal paths (there are also rock pools for dogs to sniff at low tide). ). Be aware that the waves here can be quite strong at certain times of the year, so if your dog is not a good swimmer you may need to go elsewhere.
Next up is Ilfracombe, a town we think has all the makings of a great doggy holiday. There’s ample parking and a variety of dog-friendly restaurants and attractions to explore. It has a golf course, Victorian architecture and a well-maintained promenade, creating a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

However, probably the biggest draw of Ilfracombe from your dog’s perspective is the number of different beaches you can explore with your pet throughout the year. Wildersmouth Beach, a former smugglers’ den near the town centre, is a quiet pebbled spot with unobstructed sea views, secluded Rapparee Cove and Cheyne Beach The small sandbar of Cheyne Beach is just around the corner.
Your dog will have a blast playing on this pet-friendly beach in North Devon. Saunton Sands is a rural area opposite the estuary of the River Taw, bordering the villages of Appledore and Westward Ho!, surrounded by countryside and welcoming tail-wagging residents all year round.
Sandon Sands’ excellent zoning system means dogs can run free on this vast stretch of sand, which stretches for around three and a half miles along the coast.
There are relatively few facilities here, but there is a shop on the beach where you can buy sweets or a bucket and shovel (which you don’t need when there are puppies running around…). Seasonal beach tent and sunbed rentals are also available.

Despite its remoteness and smaller size, the pretty seaside village of Clovelly is still well worth a visit if you’re spending some time in North Devon. There is a fee to enter the village, but this can usually be avoided by not using the main Clovelly car park and entering via the South West Coast Way, a public right of way. The latter route is a particularly good option as this part of the coastal road is often regarded as one of the most scenic routes in Devon.
The village’s steep main road ends at a small pebbly beach surrounded by the ancient harbor walls. Snorkeling is an especially popular pastime in the summer, as the sheltered coastal waters surrounding the beaches are a haven for marine life.

Surrounded by dunes and a wildlife reserve and an important refuge for wading birds, Dawlish Warren is South Devon’s classic sandy beach, offering plenty of waterside sports, picnicking and beach walks Or just the chance to lie on the beach. There are plenty of walking trails here too, as the Beesands are just over a mile south of Slapton Lay National Nature Reserve.

Next, we have an option that may appeal to serious hikers. Soar Mill Cove is a spectacular little sandy beach surrounded by the black rocks of Bolt Head, proving that South Devon can be dramatic. Although there are hotels and parking lots near the beach, the surroundings are very rural and sparsely populated.

Accessible only by foot or a road, this pristine stretch of rough sand is sheltered, has several safe swimming areas (guarded by lifeguards during the peak of summer), and is generally not as dog-friendly as other dog-friendly beaches around the world. There are many other beaches in South Devon that allow dogs at certain times of the year, but be aware that some councils impose restrictions on dogs on their beaches during the summer.
