Michigan’s Great Lakes offer endless adventures on the water. What is overlooked in the Great Lakes State, however, is the abundance of dog-friendly hiking trails! You’ll find plenty of dog-friendly hiking options near Lake Michigan, from cities in the Upper Peninsula to trails in the “Upper Lower Peninsula” near Lake Superior!

Walking your dog on public land is a privilege. If the parts ask for it, please connect them, clean them, and be careful. When we are at you… leave us alone and have 10 conversations :)!
Pet Friendly Places To Stay U.p. Michigan
Cotopaxi is a park. Consider the same thing if you choose to take the best companions in the world with you on hikers and hiking trails.
We camped in Marquette Michigan, a great dog friendly day add outside of town. A good combination of elevation, gradients and, on a clear day, beautiful views of Lake Superior.
There are a few intersections with mountain bike trails, so make sure you know your timing and follow the hogback trail. The final push is a bit high and rocky. I gave Cotopaxi a little push and climbed to the summit when needed.
If rocky terrain isn’t your thing, consider the nearby North Country Trail, a 4,000-mile National Highway. You go into the fun and unusual amusement park of Laganenland. Or down the water on the boardwalk in Lake Superior with several local attractions. You can’t go wrong with your adventure options in Marquette this summer. Every city has a friendly dog!
Awesome Dog Friendly Things To Do In Traverse City
Just off the coast of Munising on Grand Island in Lake Superior. A ten minute dog friendly boat ride takes you to the island. You can walk the whole island or weave around its interior. We stayed in our old cabin through the National Parks here. There are a lot of day trippers, but if you have the chance to spend the night, you will be one of the few on the big, quiet island. If your dog is not into boats, this is even better. Even our puppy didn’t move and the boat ride was fast! The cabin is two miles from the parking lot so we took a bike with panniers. It’s all pack and carry so carry light but with the essentials!
Located on the famous M-22 highway near Frankfort is Green Point Dunes. Great views of Lake Michigan, dog-friendly trails, and long enough to break a sweat on a hot summer day.
This is our favorite when we visit one of the delicious restaurants in Franklin (we live in nearby Interlochen Michigan).
There are a variety of nature preserves protected and run by the Grand Traverse and Leelanau Conservancy, and everything we found was dog friendly.
Dog Friendly Lake Michigan Beaches
This trail is in the national forest around the corner from where we live in Interlochen. It was buggy and flat when we visited in the summer. As a result it became our way. Honestly if you are not near Interlochen I don’t think you need to go all out for this. But it would be great if it was! No crowds, 6.5 mile loop and perfect flat for running.
Kotopaksi got his footing at Lost Lake at a young age and I will never forget his high energy levels here!
A peaceful alternative to the more popular camping trails to Sleeping Bear. Most of all you get beautiful views of Lake Michigan, as I saw during the two summers I spent in Michigan. The trails offer a variety of length and difficulty options, ensuring that you get that amazing blue in your head as you watch. If you are open to the beauty and power of nature, the Great Lakes will make a big impression on you!
Looking back on the trails and photos, I am very thankful for our time in Northern Michigan. We had (I believe) one of the most difficult family experiences we could go through this summer. Also guide Cotopaxi and those trails my partner and I. Our well-being is important as the hope of the Happy Hike People. He encouraged us to take intimate walks every day in northern Michigan. That’s why it’s more than walking and dogs are great. Trekking is a tool to dance through storms and come out alive after the storm. We do, and I hope anyone else going through hard times knows.
Pet Friendly Cabins In Michigan (+lakefront Cabins!)
As I live in the desert at the time of this writing, it amazes me how many travel options we have. Looks like Northern Michigan is dog friendly!
He walks, he eats, he starts to walk, he runs, he plays, and he does whatever he wants with us. Know Michigan baby! Mike Rudd, Jessica Kerr Moore and Tim Allen. LOL.
When you’re ready for a dog-friendly adventure in America, be sure to put Northern Michigan at the top of your list!
Happy trails and happy travels to you and your pups! Thanks for reading and supporting Hike Happy People, and please leave a comment below with any questions or your favorite dog-friendly hikes in Northern Michigan.

Pet friendly resorts are a lot of fun to enjoy with the amenities that come with them. In some cases, there are packages that will give you even more.
When you take your dog to a resort, they often offer something special for your pet. This can be a great plus if you don’t want to deal with pet-friendly places to eat, things to do, and everything the resort has to offer.
Discover Dog Friendly Beaches, Parks, And Restaurants In West Michigan This Summer
This is a great way to introduce you and your dog to pet-friendly travel, because you’ll be at a resort with a dog that will tell you where to go and where not to go.
One of the biggest advantages of pet friendly resorts is that they tend to be expensive. Whether you think it’s worth the price is up to you, but do a dog-friendly package worth it in a hot spot like Mackinac Island, where you pay almost a penny for the hotel at least.
Also, if you’re not camping (and dogs are welcome at no extra charge), you’ll pay the hotel’s standard pet fee, usually a daily fee.
For example, Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island has a pet fee of $100.00 per stay. If you stay there for 4 nights, it is 25 dollars a day. At Quality Inn Island, their pet fee is $25 dollars per day, for some comforts and amenities. No offense, Quality Inn, I just used you to make my point. See what I mean?

Another cost-effective way to stay at a resort is to go during off-season or when they offer promotional packages.
If you don’t want to burn a hole in your wallet, for the love of your dog, don’t visit Mackinac Island or Traverse City in June or July.
I’ve already mentioned this in several posts, but it’s at the top of the list for a reason.
Mission Point Resort is one of the only pet friendly resorts on the island. Not only do they allow dogs, they welcome them with open arms. They also have a resident dog on site, Nick the Border Collie, who you can follow on instagram @nickatthepoint.
Ultimate Dog Friendly Texas Road Trip
Currently, their pet fee is $100 dollars per stay. They also offer a pet package called Pooch on Point, which includes a two-night stay, pet fee, breakfast, cruise tickets, and welcome amenities for your dog.
The property is close to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and offers a variety of accommodations.
The really nice thing about Homestead is that their pets are included when you book. It is a bit difficult to book a pet
