Best Dog Friendly Munros – If you need a holiday that allows you to escape the real world, look no further than Scotland. From wild mountain scenery to beaches that wouldn’t be out of place on a Caribbean island, this country has it all. There are hundreds of beautiful open spaces for your four-legged friend, and while we can’t list all the fantastic walks on offer here, we’ve selected some of our favorite dog-friendly walks in Scotland.
A traditional highland farm, Balmacara Hills is dotted with agricultural settlements and woodland, ideal for exploring with your four-legged friend. This walk climbs through woodland paths and open moorland and offers great coastal views of the Isle of Skye. The starting point for the Balmacara and Reraig tour is the Balmacara Estate visitor center near Kyle, which offers an excellent overview of the region’s rich agricultural history, as well as information on the area’s many other walks.

Walk along Balnakeil Beach and Faraid Head Circular near the northern town of Durness for exceptional coastal views. The turquoise water and large dunes are perfect for a sea-loving dog, and the vast white sand offers opportunities for scenic walks.

Scotland is full of national parks to discover. At Castle Fraser, located near the Aberdeenshire village of Inverurie, dog walks will take you around the fairytale tower house at the heart of this National Trust property. There are several trails here, but try joining the Alton Brae and Miss Bristow trails for an easy two-hour walk. In spring, the park’s open paths are filled with wildflowers.

It wouldn’t be a ‘best dog walk in Scotland’ list without including the chance to catch a Munro, and this walk includes not one, but two. At 1,214 metres, Ben Lawers in Perthshire is the tenth highest Munro in Scotland and is a good option for those looking for an introduction to the mountains. The Ben Lawers Walk and Beinn Glass Walk trails are perfect for a young, energetic dog and his appropriately dressed owner.
Dog-friendly stop: The dog-friendly Capercaillie Restaurant in Killin is ideal for a beer and a hearty pub meal after a long walk.
Munros Near Oban
The Kingsbarns and Cambo walk explores part of the Fife Coastal Path. Run along the beautiful Cambo Sands beach and around the links of Kingsbarns Golf Course, before heading inland to discover the peaceful paths of Cambo Forest. At the end of your walk, why not treat your pooch to a swim in the cold North Fife Sea.

For a real mountain walk there is no better place than Holyrood Park to Arthur’s Seat. And among dog-friendly cities, Edinburgh is among the best. But in reality Holyrood Park is a 650 acre area of magnificent steep hills, Iron Age forts and Bronze Age terraces. So if the trip to Arthur’s Seat isn’t for you (or your dog), there are plenty of other easier trails for dog walkers.
The small town of Aviemore is well known to British skiers as it lies at the foot of the Cairngorms. But in the summer it is also well placed for those with dogs, offering walking trails through the acres of forest in the Cairngorms National Park. This circular walk around Loch Morlich is easy and only takes a few hours.

I love how dog friendly Loch Lomond is – it’s the perfect place to take your pooch for a weekend of adventure!
One weekend in April, The Haggis, Angus and I explored the east coast of Loch Lomond. Although many people choose to visit the busier west side of the lake, we decided to stay on the east side, which is home to a variety of walks, scenery and wildlife.
We were greeted by ideal hiking weather: cloudy skies with bursts of blue and calm water in the lake. Angus loves to travel – and we love taking him with us on our adventures. So for us Loch Lomond was the perfect starting point for a fun weekend away.

The best way to explore Loch Lomond is to combine driving and walking. We found that driving along the east side of Loch Lomond gave us more freedom, but the road to Rowardennan is quite bumpy – which certainly made us want to drive less!
Loch Lomond has a focus on sustainability, which is why we try to cover as many places as possible. After all, one of the best parts of spending time on Loch Lomond is immersing yourself in nature. You can walk pretty much anywhere as the West Highland Way runs along the lake on the east side.
Another fun way to explore Loch Lomond is by electric bike; an electric charging point for e-bikes is being installed in Drymen Square and some cafes (including St Mocha Coffee Shop in Balmaha) have chargers you can borrow.

The best way to get to the east coast of Loch Lomond is to take the train from Glasgow to Balloch and then the bus from McGill to Balmaha. Public transport only takes you as far as Balmaha, so to get to Rowardennan Lodge Hostel you have to walk (around 2.5 hours) or drive.
We stayed at Rowardennan Lodge Youth Hostel, which is one of Hostelling Scotland’s dog-friendly properties. Once a hunting lodge, this inn sits on the beautiful shores of Loch Lomond; it has the most incredible views and you can enjoy views of the lake from many of the bedrooms and the living room.
Our private room overlooked Loch Lomond which was wonderful to wake up to. The bathrooms are shared and the showers are some of the best I’ve seen in a hostel. Wi-Fi is a bit spotty, but I hear it will be improved soon. Plus, this is a place where you want to relax, not surf social media!

There is also a large kitchen and several dining areas where you can prepare your own meals or enjoy a hot meal prepared at the guest house.
You can choose between a continental breakfast or a cooked to order breakfast; you can also order a three-course meal for dinner, which we had one night. We had soup and bread to start, Tikka Masala for main course and a chocolate brownie for dessert – it was delicious!
Angus was also able to join us for dinner – we brought him our own bowl and he ate happily while we ate our meal.
After dinner we went to the lounge where we relaxed overlooking Loch Lomond and had a quiet beer (yes, this pub is licensed and you can buy craft beer!).
A Dog Friendly Hostelling Scotland Break In The Heart Of Glencoe
I did a lot of hiking in Scotland and used these hostels as a base – they are a fantastic option if you are looking for comfortable accommodation at an affordable price.
One of the best things about Hostelling Scotland hostels is that they are wholesome and family friendly. We met people from all walks of life – young students, pensioners walking the West Highland Way and thirty-somethings (like us) using the hostel as a base for some walks.
If you wish to bring your dog there will be a small charge of £5 for each night your dog stays.
The Clachan Inn is one of my favorite pubs in Scotland; the pub was licensed in 1734, making it the oldest pub in Scotland and one of the oldest in Scotland.
Dog Friendly Campsites In The Highlands
The pub area is dog friendly (and in my opinion the best place to sit for a meal). The bar owners and staff are fantastic – they were happy to see Angus and gave him loads of treats and a bowl of water.
I ordered the Aberdeen Angus burger which was delicious and Craig had the beef pie. He swears it’s one of the best pies he’s ever eaten!
This pub has a local feel and definitely has a special place in my heart. In my opinion it is a must visit.
The perch was another highlight of our visit to Loch Lomond. Located on the water’s edge, The Perch is elegant but offers casual dining. They specialize in delicious brunches, lunches and homemade cakes.
