Soddy Daisy, North Chickamauga Creek tumbles down the side of Walden Ridge just 20 minutes from downtown Chattanooga, winding steeply between Signal and Mowbray mountains, creating a series of deep, inviting pools along the way. The creek is full of rocks that create several little pockets of swimming holes, so hike up the creek until you find the perfect spot. As with any large swimming hole, there are rocks for the less adventurous to jump or sunbathe on.

About 40 minutes from downtown Chattanooga, Foster Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the state of Tennessee. For lovers of swimming holes, the plunge pool at the base of the drop of 60 feet is great. A short hike that combines the Hiker’s Loop Trail and the Fiery Gizzard Trail to the summit is a great way to work up a sweat before a summer shower. This place can get quite crowded during the summer months and is popular for a reason. Seriously amazing place!
Owned and managed by the City of Soddy Daisy, Big Soddy Creek Gulf is a 285-acre wilderness area located 22 minutes from downtown Chattanooga. The trail follows – you guessed it – Big Sody Creek, across the bay and cascades over unique rock formations, offering many opportunities to cool off in the water. This beautiful blue hole enchants with its emerald waters, rocky mountains and lush surroundings. Big Soddy Creek Golf can get crowded on hot summer days, but if you walk you’re likely to find your own oasis. Yes, we are adding another waterfall pool. Not to mention they are too good! This, in particular, is DeSoto Falls, located on the west face of Lookout Mountain in Mentone, Alabama, about 45 minutes from downtown Chattanooga. The top of the falls is characterized by a series of small falls under a man-made dam. Then, in a rather dramatic turn of events, the waterfall cascades down a sheer cliff creating the 104-foot-long DeSoto Falls, which crashes into a giant punchball below. Weekend warrior swimmers can take a cool summer dip in this punchbowl. Getting to the bottom of the falls requires a rough scramble up a very steep path, but reaching the shore and the cool water below is well worth the reward.
Both of these refreshing swimming spots can be found at Save Gulf, a new state park in Tennessee. Both Blue Hole and Greater Falls are accessible via the same trail via the access road from the Greater Falls parking lot. Make the most of this amazing area with a day adventure and plan to hike both trails! From the trailhead, travel .5 miles to the Blue Hole on your right. When you reach these waters, backtrack .5 miles, and take a left for an .8 mile loop that takes you to three separate falls: Greeter Falls Upper and Lower, as well as Boardtree Falls. Getting to this swimming hole is a little difficult, so you don’t want to drag a big beach bag, fancy camera, or small children on your back. Instead, pack a towel and wear good water shoes for this adventure.

The first is filled with a beautiful 10-foot waterfall. It is a large shady pool surrounded by rocks on three sides. This is a tough place you can easily find for Vermont cliff riders and tough adventure types.

Directions: From downtown Montgomery, take Route 58 East to the gravel pullout. It is a steep path down to the river. From here, you have to travel upstream (probably in the stream) until you reach the swimming area.
If you find yourself in northern Vermont during the day, head to Byrd Amusement Park on the Gihon River. This beautiful place is our top choice for families.
